Egloskerry Pupils Take Learning Outdoors

Pupils from Egloskerry Primary School, part of the Athena Learning Trust, recently embarked on an exciting history trip to Warbstow Castle, an Iron Age hillfort with a fascinating past.

The children enjoyed exploring the ancient ramparts of Warbstow Castle, engaging in hands-on learning and teamwork. The visit provided an opportunity for the pupils to connect with history beyond the classroom, sparking their curiosity and imagination.

Discovering ‘The Giant’s Grave’

Warbstow Castle, also known as Warbstow Bury, is one of Cornwall’s largest and best-preserved Iron Age hillforts. Local legend claims it was once the home of a giant who met his end after the giant of Launceston Castle threw a tool at him.

In the centre of the fort lies a long mound with faint ditches, known locally as ‘The Giant’s Grave.’ While folklore links it to the hillfort’s mythical past, experts suggest it is more likely to be a medieval rabbit warren.

A Curriculum to Inspire

The visit aligns with Egloskerry Primary School’s history curriculum, which focuses on fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of the past. Pupils study a range of historical periods, from ancient civilisations to the mediaeval era and modern history, drawing connections between historical events and contemporary issues.

Principal Lynsey Slater from Launceston Primary School said:

“I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped bring history to life for our children on this history trip. At Egloskerry Primary School, we aim to instill a passion for learning and appreciation for human history with a view to ensuring that when our pupils leave us, they are ready to contribute positively to society.”

Proud of Their School

Egloskerry Primary School is rated Good by Ofsted in areas such as quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, and early years provision. Personal development and leadership and management have been rated Outstanding.

Ofsted inspectors noted that pupils are proud of their school and feel well cared for. Teachers and leaders have high expectations, fostering ambition and confidence among the students.

This memorable trip to Warbstow Castle highlights the school’s dedication to engaging and immersive education that connects past and present for its pupils.
