Exciting Changes at Local School as Applications Open for 2024

Launceston College, part of the Athena Learning Trust, has welcomed a new principal, Matthew Thompson, who is bringing a bold vision to the school for the new academic year. With extensive experience in education, both in the UK and internationally, Matthew is keen to collaborate with the community to ensure the continued success of the school.

Matthew Thompson’s Background

Matthew, who previously served as the Regional Director for Cornwall at Athena Learning Trust, has an impressive background in education, having taught in China, Tanzania, and across the south of England. Now settled in Cornwall with his wife and young child, he is ready to make an impact at Launceston College.

As part of his plans, Matthew is set to make a unique first appointment—Bonnie, a black Labrador, who will soon join the school as its new dog, bringing an extra touch of warmth to the school environment.

Commitment to Excellence

In a message to parents and carers, Matthew outlined his vision for Launceston College, emphasising a commitment to high expectations across all areas, including academic success, sporting achievements, and extra-curricular engagement. He also highlighted the importance of fostering a strong sense of community within the school.

Communication with families will be a priority under his leadership, ensuring that parents and carers are kept in the loop as their children progress through school.

Open Evening and School Applications

Applications for secondary school places at Launceston College are now open, with the deadline set for 31st October. Families interested in learning more about the school are encouraged to attend an open evening on Thursday, 26th September from 5pm to 8pm.

Launceston College has consistently been rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in various categories, including quality of education, behaviour, personal development, leadership, and sixth-form provision. Ofsted inspectors noted the school’s broad and ambitious curriculum, designed to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
