Launceston Primary Pupils Visit Cotehele for Outdoor Learning Experience
Year 2 pupils swap the classroom for a day of discovery in nature
Year 2 pupils from Launceston Primary School, part of the Athena Learning Trust, enjoyed a memorable outdoor learning experience this term during a school trip to Cotehele, a historic National Trust estate near the River Tamar.
Led by teacher Mr Rosevear, the pupils explored both the natural landscape and the heritage of the site through hands-on activities designed to tie in with their classroom topics.
Freshwater Discoveries and Hidden Habitats
The day began with two outdoor sessions. During pond dipping, pupils discovered a variety of freshwater creatures including caddisfly larvae and water beetles. A guided micro-habitats walk followed, encouraging the children to observe carefully and think about the plants and animals living in the area.
National Trust staff praised the group for their excellent behaviour and thoughtful questions throughout the day.
History Comes to Life at the Victorian Mill
In the afternoon, the group visited Cotehele’s working Victorian Mill where they learned how flour is made and saw the waterwheel in action. The visit linked closely to topics covered back in the classroom and gave pupils a real-life insight into how water power has been used throughout history.
Championing Learning Beyond the Classroom
Kate Eyre, Principal at Launceston Primary School, said:
“This trip was a perfect example of learning beyond the classroom. Our Year 2 pupils showed real enthusiasm, curiosity, and maturity throughout the day. We’re incredibly proud of the way they represented our school and so grateful to have such a rich educational resource like Cotehele nearby.”
Launceston Primary School, which is rated Good by Ofsted, places a strong emphasis on outdoor and experiential learning. Inspectors have highlighted the school’s successful learning environment and the staff’s determination for all pupils to succeed.
