Launceston College Stands Up to Bullying: Anti-Bullying Week Highlights

Published On: 15 November 2024Last Updated: 15 November 2024By

Launceston College, part of Athena Learning Trust, has taken a strong stance against bullying by actively participating in Anti-Bullying Week, observed nationwide from 11th to 15th November. This annual event aims to raise awareness of bullying, promote kindness, and encourage students to speak out against harmful behaviours.

Promoting a Culture of Respect

This year’s theme, ‘Choose Respect’, underscores the importance of handling differences and disagreements respectfully. At Launceston College, staff are dedicated to fostering a positive and inclusive school culture where every student feels safe and valued.

To support this, students adhere to the school’s Anti-Bullying Agreement, which outlines a clear framework for respectful behaviour. The agreement includes commitments such as reporting bullying, refraining from cyberbullying, respecting others’ opinions, and embracing diversity in all its forms.

The Principal’s Perspective

Matthew Thompson, Principal of Launceston College, emphasised the importance of addressing bullying comprehensively:

“At Launceston College, our Anti-Bullying Procedure is part of the work we do to stamp out bullying and is supported by work in our Character Curriculum which includes Information and Guidance (IAG) lessons and assemblies.

“I want every child to enjoy coming to school, so they can learn to the best of their ability. All bullying the school is made aware of is investigated thoroughly. It’s really important that children who have harmed another, either physically or emotionally, redress their actions, and staff will make sure that they understand what they have done and the impact of their actions.”

A Commitment to Excellence

Launceston College has consistently been recognised for its commitment to quality education and fostering a supportive environment. Rated Good by Ofsted, the school excels in areas such as quality of education, behaviour, personal development, leadership, and sixth-form provision.

Ofsted inspectors also highlighted that pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), benefit from a broad and ambitious curriculum. Students build their knowledge logically and work towards qualifications tailored to their aspirations.

Supporting Every Student

The school’s approach to bullying extends beyond policies to include a well-rounded Character Curriculum. Through Information and Guidance (IAG) lessons and assemblies, students learn to respect others and take accountability for their actions.

Launceston College’s dedication to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that every student thrives.
