Progress 8 Score Highlights Above-Average Achievement

Students and staff at Launceston College, part of the Athena Learning Trust, have plenty to celebrate as the school has been recognised as the 4th highest performing school in Cornwall for its Key Stage 4 results. Ratified GCSE league tables published by the Department for Education (DfE) this month confirm the college’s strong standing.

Over 50% of Launceston College students achieved a grade 5 or above in their English and maths GCSEs. In addition, the school’s above-average Progress 8 score highlights that students are performing up to half a grade higher in each qualification compared to similar students across the country.

What is Progress 8?

Progress 8 is a key performance measure designed to reflect the progress students make from Year 6 to Year 11. It compares each student’s Attainment 8 score (their best grades across eight subjects) with those of students nationally who had similar KS2 SATs results. This measure ensures schools focus on improving outcomes for all students, not just those at the top or bottom of the grade spectrum.

Subject Highlights

The college’s GCSE success was evident back in August when students celebrated their results. Notable achievements include:

  • Approximately 50% of grades in biology, chemistry, physics, religious studies, and drama were grades 7-9.
  • Around 25% of grades in maths, history, and geography also reached the 7-9 range.

Recognition from the Principal

Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, shared his excitement about the recognition:

“I am thrilled that Launceston College has been recognised as the 4th highest performing school in Cornwall at Key Stage 4 by the Department for Education. This achievement reflects not only the success of our students but also the dedication of our staff. Our strong Progress 8 score also shows that every student at Launceston College will be supported to reach their full potential.”
