Launceston Celebrates Historical Railway Heritage with Nameplate Presentation
In a ceremonial gathering at the Guildhall, the town of Launceston marked a momentous occasion as Luke Farley, a representative from Great Western Railway (GWR), presented Mayor Helen Bailey with the Launceston Castle Name Plate.
This significant piece of railway heritage commemorates the retirement of the Castle Class train, a symbol of the rich transportation history that Launceston shares with the railway.
Honourable Ceremony
The event was graced by the presence of Deputy Mayor Nicola Gilbert, highlighting the importance of this gesture to the community. The Launceston Castle Name Plate, once adorning the now-retired Castle Class train, symbolises not only the town’s historical connection with the railways but also its ongoing commitment to preserving such heritage.
Community Collaboration
This meaningful transfer was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Launceston Railway Circle, with notable contribution from member Les Whaley. Their dedication to railway history and preservation played a crucial role in bringing this artefact to the public’s attention.
A New Home for History
The nameplate has been graciously accepted into the collection of the Town Museum, where it will be displayed for residents and visitors alike to admire. This addition to the museum’s collection offers a tangible link to Launceston’s past, enriching the cultural tapestry of the town.
A Picturesque Setting
Following the presentation, a photograph capturing this historic moment was taken in the Castle grounds, providing a stunning backdrop of the town’s beautiful castle. This setting not only underscored the significance of the event but also highlighted Launceston’s natural and architectural beauty.
Preserving Heritage for Future Generations
The incorporation of the Launceston Castle Name Plate into the Town Museum’s collection serves as a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving its history. By safeguarding such artefacts, Launceston ensures that future generations can appreciate the rich tapestry of stories that have shaped the town. This event, symbolising the unity between Launceston’s past and present, paves the way for a future where heritage and community continue to thrive side by side.
