Hands-on Science for Sixth Form Students

Students from Launceston College Sixth Form, part of Athena Learning Trust, took their learning beyond the classroom with a recent visit to Wembury Marine Centre. The trip involved 31 Year 12 and 13 Biology and Applied Science students, who joined representatives from the Devon Wildlife Trust for a memorable rock pool safari.

The fieldwork allowed students to delve into ecological studies, with activities including random sampling of limpet shells, measuring their height and diameter, and comparing data from the upper and lower shore. Highlights of the day included spotting marine creatures such as a lobster, several pipe fish, and even a dolphin’s beak.

Expanding Learning Through Fieldwork

Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, praised the experience:

“Learning isn’t just done in the classroom, for Science students especially, getting out and taking part in fieldwork is a brilliant way to really embed the learning they do whilst in college.

“I want to say thank you to the Devon Wildlife Trust for giving our students such a brilliant day, the feedback was incredibly positive and it’s clear that the group found it a memorable learning experience.”

Wembury Bay, located in South Devon, offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to experience marine life up close. Recognised as a Marine Conservation Area since 1981, its rocky cliffs, slate reefs, and wave-cut platforms host a vibrant array of wildlife, making it one of the UK’s top spots for marine exploration.

A Broad and Ambitious Curriculum

Launceston College is rated Good by Ofsted in categories including Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Leadership and Management, and Sixth Form provision. Inspectors noted that all pupils, including those with SEND, benefit from a broad and ambitious curriculum designed to build logically on existing knowledge. Sixth Form students, in particular, study for qualifications that align closely with their future aspirations.

Biology students at Launceston Sixth delve into subjects ranging from genetics and ecology to bioenergetics and animal physiology. Applied Science students develop practical expertise across biology, chemistry, and physics, enhancing both their knowledge and technical skills.

This hands-on experience at Wembury Marine Centre further underscores the college’s commitment to providing engaging, real-world learning opportunities for its students.
