Where is Best for Your Health This October Half Term? NHS Cornwall Offers Guidance
As the October half-term begins, NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board is urging Cornwall residents and visitors to think carefully about where to seek medical help. With the days getting shorter and colder, considering the best option for non-life-threatening health needs could save time and provide quicker relief.
Dr Chris Reid, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, advised, “Visiting the emergency department should be the last option on the list for non-life threatening injury or illness, especially when there are 10 minor injury units in the county, including urgent care treatment centres, pharmacists, and NHS111 who can help.”
Here’s a quick guide on where to find help this half-term:
Pharmacists
Pharmacists across Cornwall can offer advice and treatments for various conditions, including earaches, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and emergency contraception. They can also supply certain medicines if GP surgeries are closed. Find your nearest open pharmacy.
GPs
Whether you’re a resident or visiting Cornwall, you can still reach out to your own GP, even while away from home. They can arrange for prescriptions to be collected at a nearby pharmacy.
Minor Injury Units and Urgent Treatment Centres
For injuries like broken bones or cuts needing stitches, Minor Injury Units (MIUs) and Urgent Treatment Centres are available alternatives to the emergency department. West Cornwall Hospital offers one such Urgent Treatment Centre. It’s a good idea to check live waiting times to choose the shortest wait. Check live opening and waiting times.
NHS 111 for Urgent Care Advice
For expert guidance, NHS111 offers online and phone support to direct people to the right care. This service is also available for urgent mental health needs.
Mental Health Support
If you’re in need of urgent mental health support, NHS111 is available to help. For more detailed mental health resources, visit the NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly website.
Emergency Department and 999 Calls
Emergency departments and 999 should be reserved for life-threatening injuries or illnesses only, such as severe bleeding, chest pain, or loss of consciousness.
Community Hubs for Warm Spaces and Friendly Faces
Cornwall’s community hubs are open for those needing a warm space, a friendly face, or a hot meal this half term. Your Community Gateway can also be reached at 01872 266383 to arrange personalised support.
