St. Agnes Coastguard Responds to Object Sighting Off Cornwall Coast

Published On: 11 March 2024Last Updated: 11 March 2024By

On Sunday, March 10th, 2024, at approximately 3:31 PM, the St Agnes Coastguard Search & Rescue Team was dispatched following a report of an unidentified object spotted in the waters between Perransands and Ligger Point.

The team was mobilised to investigate the potential hazard or individual in distress as part of their ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of maritime activities in the area.

Upon arrival at the specified location, the Coastguard team quickly determined that the object in question was not the wave buoy, a common fixture in such waters used for monitoring oceanographic conditions. This initial assessment led to a comprehensive but expedient search along the shoreline and the immediate vicinity where the object was last observed.

Despite the thorough efforts of the rescue team, no further sightings or evidence of the object were reported. The operation was subsequently concluded, and the team was stood down, returning to their station without incident. The nature of the object remains undetermined, but it is suspected to have been either marine debris or possibly a marine animal, a reminder of the diverse and often unpredictable nature of the marine environment.

The incident, though ultimately yielding no significant findings, was approached with professionalism and thoroughness that underscores the vital role of search and rescue teams. Such actions, often prompted by reports from concerned individuals or groups, are critical in preventing potential maritime disasters and in protecting marine life. The St Agnes Coastguard Search & Rescue Team has highlighted the importance of community vigilance and the value of reporting any unusual sightings or concerns, emphasising that every call, made with good intent, is a critical part of maintaining safety along the coastline.

The coastguard reminds the public to remain vigilant and to dial 999 to request the coastguard if they see someone in difficulty along the coast, reinforcing their message to stay safe.
