South West Water Embarks on Major Leak Detection and Water Efficiency Campaign
To address water wastage and enhance the efficiency of its water network, South West Water has launched a comprehensive campaign to detect and repair leaks across its service area.
Utilising state-of-the-art technology, including satellite vision and ground-based techniques, the utility is on a mission to uncover and fix hidden leaks that contribute to water loss.
The effort is part of South West Water’s broader strategy to improve water usage and ensure the sustainability of its resources. The company’s dedicated teams are working tirelessly to minimise wastage and promote the efficient use of water, aligning with their commitment to environmental stewardship and resource management.
South West Water’s Plan for Change, detailed on their website, outlines an ambitious set of goals aimed at transforming the water and wastewater networks for the better. By 2050, the utility aims to achieve a 50% reduction in leaks, install smart meters for 90% of customers, and reduce per capita water consumption to 110 litres per day. Furthermore, the plan envisions a significant decrease in water extraction from rivers, aiming for a reduction of 209 million litres per day.
The improvements are not limited to water supply management. The utility’s Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan sets forth an extensive list of objectives to enhance wastewater services. These include the removal of 1,470 hectares of surface water, the addition of 510,000 cubic meters of storage capacity, the upgrade of 3,000 kilometers of sewers, and the improvement of 110 wastewater treatment works by 2050.
To ensure the success of these ambitious projects, South West Water has divided the region into 22 catchment areas, each with a tailored plan for upgrades and improvements. Major projects are underway to meet these goals, demonstrating the utility’s dedication to providing top-tier water services while protecting the environment and planning for future needs.
As part of this comprehensive campaign, South West Water is inviting its customers to learn more about the leak detection efforts and the extensive plans in place to enhance water and wastewater networks. By embracing new technologies and innovative methods, the utility is committed to ensuring the provision of some of the best drinking water in the world and a reliable wastewater service that prioritises environmental protection and sustainable growth.
