Sharp’s Brewing Co Clinches Prestigious Bronze at Brewing ‘Oscars’
In an impressive display of brewing excellence, Sharp’s Brewing Co has secured a bronze medal at the illustrious International Brewing & Cider Awards 2024, further cementing its reputation on the global stage.
The Rock-based brewery’s special ale, Sea Fury, stood out in the ‘Cask Ale 4.9% – 6.9% ABV’ category, triumphing amidst fierce competition from some of the world’s finest beers.
A Historic Event in Manchester
For the first time in its 138-year history, the brewing industry’s equivalent of the Oscars was hosted in Manchester. This event, which has been a staple since 1886, showcases the pinnacle of brewing and cider-making from across the globe. Over three days, from 19th to 21st March, an international panel of 38 judges, led by Chair Rob McCaig, deliberated to award 115 medals to deserving beers and ciders from as far afield as Cambodia, China, and the USA, among others.
Sea Fury: A Brew of Distinction
Sea Fury has not only captured the bronze this year but has also been a favourite in previous competitions, including being named ‘World’s Best’ and ‘Country Winner’ at the World Beer Awards 2021. Brewed first in 1996, this special bitter ale was developed to meet the local fishermen’s demand for a robust ale to savour after enduring the treacherous Atlantic seas. Its rich malt and dark berry notes exemplify the quality that Sharp’s Brewery strives to deliver in every batch.
Team Effort Leads to Global Acclaim
Aaron McClure, Head Brewer at Sharp’s, expressed his pride in the achievement, noting the exceptional quality of competition at the awards. “The International Brewing and Cider Awards are like the Oscars of brewing awards. To come away with a bronze for Sea Fury is quite a remarkable achievement,” he commented. Aaron highlighted the rigorous judging process and the hard work of the Cornwall-based brewing team whose innovation and dedication have consistently produced world-class beers.
Recognition of Brewing Excellence
James Nicholls, Marketing Controller at Sharp’s, also remarked on the significance of this win, saying, “We’re incredibly proud to be recognised for our beer and our commitment to world-class brewing.” This accolade not only highlights Sea Fury but also brings attention to other beers in Sharp’s portfolio, like Doom Bar, enhancing their reputation in the market.
Rob, Chair of Beer Judging, reflected on the challenges faced in selecting this year’s winners. “This year proved to be one of the toughest yet to determine which of the beers were deserving of a medal,” he stated. The exceptional quality and volume of entries made the competition particularly challenging but rewarding.
