Penzance Calls for Entries to the First-ever Mayor’s Young Artist Program

Penzance is inviting young artists aged 15-19, who either live, work, or study in the Penzance Parish area, to apply for a unique position: the Mayor’s Young Artist.

This new program aims to recognise and celebrate the creativity and talent of young individuals in the area, emphasising the integral role of art and culture in the community.

Stephen Reynolds, the Mayor of Penzance, announced the program, highlighting the town’s tradition of honouring the contributions of army, police, and sea cadets to community life. This year, the focus expands to include the arts. “Art and culture play a huge role in local life, and that’s why this year we will be appointing our first-ever Mayor’s Young Artist,” Stephen stated. He expressed his eagerness to work with the chosen artist or group and witness their creative journey over the upcoming year.

The selected Mayor’s Young Artist will have the opportunity to create a piece of visual art that reflects their interpretation of Penzance and the civic year. The final artwork will be displayed at the Penlee House Gallery & Museum in May 2025, offering a platform for the young artist to showcase their talent to the community.

In addition to the exposure, the program offers a £500 bursary to the appointed artist or group. This bursary covers a one-on-one mentoring session with a professional artist, art materials, and travel costs, ensuring the young artist has the resources needed to explore and express their creativity. The Mayor’s Young Artist will also participate in various local events throughout the year, which will serve as inspiration for their artwork. These events range from Golowan to Remembrance Sunday, reflecting the diverse cultural life of Penzance.

Anna Renton, the Director of Penlee House, voiced her support for the program, underscoring the significance of nurturing the next generation of artists in Penzance. Penlee House Gallery & Museum, known for celebrating the region’s artistic heritage, is delighted to support and showcase the work of the Mayor’s Young Artist.

Young artists interested in applying can do so online or via email to digital@penleehouse.org.uk , providing three examples of their work and explaining why they want to be the Mayor’s Young Artist. The deadline for applications is 12 noon on Monday, 8 April 2024.

This call to young artists not only highlights Penzance’s commitment to fostering artistic talent but also provides a platform for young voices to contribute to the town’s cultural narrative.
