Major Restoration Begins at The Gardeners’ House Penzance with Local Contractor at the Helm
In a significant development for The Gardeners’ House Penzance, work has commenced on a major restoration project aimed at revitalising the historic site located in the heart of Morrab Gardens, Penzance. The project officially started this February, marking a pivotal moment in the journey to bring the dilapidated former gardeners’ house back to its former glory.
The Gardeners’ House team has entrusted the restoration to Jewell Construction Limited, a respected family-owned Cornish business known for their expertise in heritage building projects. With a portfolio that includes the restoration of notable sites such as Redruth Buttermarket, Krowji, and The Alverton Hotel in Truro, Jewell Construction brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of local heritage to the project.
This restoration initiative is not just about preserving a building; it’s about creating a vibrant community hub that connects people with the natural world and the rich horticultural heritage of West Cornwall. The refurbished Gardeners’ House is set to host well-being workshops, green community projects, and a sensory garden, all designed to support the mental and physical well-being of the community.
The project’s significance is further highlighted by the involvement of key local figures and organisations, including Martin Jewell of Jewell Construction Limited, Cllr Louis Gardner of Cornwall Council, Cllr Stephen Reynolds of Penzance Town Council, and representatives from the Penzance Town Deal Board. Their collective commitment underscores the project’s potential to rejuvenate Penzance while preserving its natural and historical heritage.
With funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Penzance Town Deal Fund, The Gardeners’ House is poised to become a cornerstone for community engagement, education, and well-being. The project also aims to create a home for a unique archive of documents and illustrations, showcasing two centuries of West Cornwall’s natural heritage and making it accessible to the public for the first time.
This restoration marks the beginning of a new chapter for The Gardeners’ House, transforming it into a vital resource for Penzance and a testament to the community’s resilience and dedication to preserving its cultural and natural heritage.
