In a breathtaking display of courage and quick action, the volunteer crew of Rock RNLI’s D Class lifeboat, Rusper II, launched a life-saving mission on the morning of 12 April 2024.

The crew responded to urgent reports of a dog, later identified as Waffle, that had tragically fallen off a cliff into the turbulent waters of the Camel Estuary near Greenaway.

First Responder’s First Rescue

The lifeboat was launched at 9am, crewed by three brave volunteers, including Duncan, who experienced his first rescue operation. He described the harrowing scene, “Once on scene it became clear the dog had been washed into the sea and was in need of urgent help at this point.”

The situation escalated when it was discovered that Waffle had lost consciousness due to the ordeal. The crew promptly began CPR, managing to revive the stricken animal during the rush back to shore. Duncan shared his relief and pride, stating, “It was great to finally put my training into practice.”

A Community’s Relief

Upon reaching the shore, the volunteer crew handed over the exhausted but alive Waffle to the Coastguard and the anxious owners, who immediately sought veterinary care. The owners later reported that Waffle had suffered a broken pelvis but was expected to make a full recovery.

Grateful Owners and a Second Chance

The impact of the rescue was profound not just for Waffle, but also for her owners, who expressed deep gratitude to the RNLI team. They recalled the terrifying moment, saying, “Foolishly, she was off the lead and fell 70 foot off a cliff into a rough sea, battling the waves and rocks until she was rescued. We are so grateful to the crew.”

In a heartwarming follow-up, Waffle and her owners returned to the station the following Sunday to personally thank the crew that saved her life.

Always Ready to Respond

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils of the coast and the essential role of the RNLI, which operates around the clock, 365 days a year. For emergencies along the coast, they urge the public to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

A Commendable Beginning

The operation marked a significant milestone for Duncan, encapsulating both the challenges and the triumphs of serving with the RNLI. “Congratulations on your first shout and first life saved,” his team proudly acclaimed, celebrating the successful rescue that underscored the critical importance of their work.
