In a sombre turn of events, Heartlands, the cherished community hub in Pool, faces an uncertain future. Despite the unwavering dedication of the Heartlands Trust, the registered charity responsible for its operation, and the hardworking staff, the facility’s operating costs have spiralled out of control, compelling a heart-wrenching decision.

Economic Challenges and Dwindling Income

Recent economic challenges have dealt a severe blow to Heartlands. Soaring utility costs and a decline in operational revenue have created an unsustainable financial situation. Exhausting all available funding options, the Heartlands Trust finds itself at a crossroads with no alternative but to take drastic measures.

Closure of Vital Facilities

Regrettably, it is anticipated that by the end of January, the Café, Soft Play, and the Conference Centre, along with meeting rooms, will cease operations. The Trust is committed to refunding deposits and tickets for any future events that must be cancelled.

A Shared Commitment to Community

Despite these challenges, both the Heartlands Trust and Cornwall Council share a common goal – to ensure that the site continues to serve the local community. Cornwall Council, the owner of the Heartlands site and the Trust’s lessor, is dedicated to maintaining public access to the park and gardens. The Registration Service and commercially leased shops and offices will remain open.

A Remarkable Legacy

Heartlands, initially funded by the National Lottery, was envisioned as a project to enhance the local community’s quality of life. Over the past twelve years, it has transformed into a beloved space, hosting various events, including Bonfire Night, Christmas markets, and Geekfest, drawing thousands of visitors annually. Heartlands boasts the largest free playground in Cornwall and serves as an educational resource for local schools.

While Heartlands has excelled in fulfilling its community-centric mission, financial stability has remained elusive. Budget overruns during the initial construction phase and unfulfilled developer contributions for playground maintenance have strained its financial viability.
