Yesterday afternoon, an emergency unfolded at sea, leading to a coordinated rescue effort involving multiple agencies.

The Mevagissey Coastguard team was paged at precisely 3.21 pm on 18th July, responding to reports of an angler who had fallen and sustained serious injuries.

Immediate Action by Skipper and Coastguard Teams

The incident occurred while the angler was aboard a boat. In a swift and decisive move, the skipper of the vessel navigated directly into Gorran Haven, beaching the boat to facilitate a quicker rescue. The Mevagissey Coastguard team, supported by the St Austell Coastguard, promptly assessed the situation upon arrival.

A team paramedic from the coastguard took the lead in managing the casualty. The injured angler was carefully extricated from the boat using an alpine stretcher, demonstrating the precision and care involved in such rescues.

Transfer to Safety

Following the initial assessment and extraction, the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust arrived on the scene. They transported the injured angler to a nearby cricket club, which served as a landing site for the Coastguard Helicopter. Ground teams from the coastguard were instrumental in transferring the casualty onto the helicopter, ensuring a seamless operation.

The angler was then flown to hospital for further medical attention.

Family’s Gratitude

In a heartwarming conclusion to a tense situation, the family of the injured angler reached out to express their gratitude to everyone involved in the rescue. Their message underscored the vital role played by each member of the rescue teams and the coordinated effort that made this rapid response possible.

The rescue operation highlights the readiness and professionalism of the coastguard and ambulance services, demonstrating their crucial role in responding to emergencies at sea.
