Cornwall Springs into Action with Community Tree Planting Initiative
This spring, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are set to become greener, thanks to a series of tree planting events organised by the Forest For Cornwall. In collaboration with local community groups and Parish Councils, the initiative aims to enhance local areas through the benefits of new trees, providing shade, shelter, cleaner air, and supporting nature and climate change mitigation efforts.
The call is out for volunteers to join these environmentally beneficial activities, set to start around 10am across various locations in Cornwall. Participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves and a spade to the events, which promise to be a hands-on opportunity to make a tangible difference in the community and the environment.
The schedule for the tree planting includes a range of activities from planting standard size trees to creating woodland extensions, hedges, copses, and even a small community orchard. Highlights of the planting sessions include:
- Torpoint is hosting two sessions; the first on Thursday 8th February at Cambridge Field/Bellevue Square for standard size trees, followed by woodland extension and a line of trees along a footpath in Sennen Close Park on 13th and 14th February.
- Carn Brea will see a new hedge around Moorfield Recreation Ground on 26th and 27th February, contributing to the area’s green infrastructure.
- Downderry/Looe is set for hedge, copse, and community orchard planting on 16th and 17th February at Tanver Yate Field, aiming to enhance local biodiversity.
- Kesoberi Community Farm in Mousehole plans to enrich its landscape with hundreds of saplings for new community woodland across three days in February and March.
- London Apprentice: Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th February. Planting new woodland copse with Pentewan Parish Council, PL26 7AS
- Camborne will witness the planting of new standard trees across its parks in a series of events from 22nd February to 1st March, beautifying and greening public spaces.
- Seaton/Looe focuses on replanting hedges along the car park on 12th and 13th March, enhancing the area’s natural charm.
These planting events are open to everyone, inviting the community to contribute to a greener, more sustainable Cornwall. The Forest For Cornwall initiative emphasises the collective impact of local actions in addressing broader environmental challenges and encourages widespread participation and sharing among those interested in making a positive environmental impact.
