A Year On: Crantock Surf Life Saving Club Reinforces Beach Safety During Easter Holidays

Published On: 29 March 2024Last Updated: 29 March 2024By

A year has passed since Crantock Surf Life Saving Club issued a poignant reminder about the hazards of engaging in unsafe beach activities such as digging into, climbing up, and falling off of sand dunes.

Today, the message remains as vital as ever, underscoring the club’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of beachgoers.

Easter Safety Measures Enhanced

Now the Easter break is heere, the club is delighted to announce the return of their RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) colleagues to the beach. This year, the lifesaving presence will commence earlier than in previous years, offering an added layer of safety for families and individuals enjoying the coastal area during the holiday period.

An Incident Remembered

Reflecting on the importance of beach safety, the club recalls an incident from Good Friday last year, when a patrol member intervened after spotting a child disappearing into a sand cave they had burrowed into a dune cliff. The child was informed about the potential dangers, and immediate action was taken to collapse the hole safely, showcasing the perilous nature of such activities. The ease with which the sand collapsed served as a stark reminder of the suffocation risk posed by collapsing sand structures.

Urgent Safety Advice

In light of the ongoing risk of accidents, the club stresses the importance of vigilance and immediate action in the event of an emergency. Beachgoers are urged to dial 999 and request the Coastguard if they find themselves in a perilous situation. This advice is part of the club’s broader effort to educate the public on the importance of enjoying the beach safely, emphasising the need for a positive dialogue around beach safety.

A Community Effort

The Crantock Surf Life Saving Club’s message is clear: enjoy the beach, but always be mindful of the inherent dangers that come with certain leisure activities. The club’s plea for positive engagement and shared awareness is a testament to the community’s collective responsibility in ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

During the Easter holidays, the presence of RNLI lifeguards and the vigilance of the Crantock Surf Life Saving Club will be crucial in safeguarding the well-being of all who visit Crantock’s beautiful beaches. Their message is a reminder of the simple steps everyone can take to avoid unnecessary risks and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience for themselves and others.
