Two Sailors Scramble Ashore at Nanjizal Bay After Rough Voyage from France
Gale-force winds, a stranded dinghy, and a yacht in trouble – here’s what happened on Tuesday evening
Lands End Coastguard Search & Rescue Team were called out at 6.15pm on Tuesday 1st April to reports of a yacht in difficulty at Nanjizal Bay, a remote and rugged stretch of coastline in West Cornwall.
On arrival, they found two sailors already ashore. Both appeared fatigued after what the Coastguard team described as a “rough passage from France”.
Dinghy Left on the Rocks
Although the pair had made it to land safely, their small dinghy remained on the rocks below the steps. They had removed the engine and oars beforehand to prevent any damage.
Sennen Cove Lifeboat Station was also on scene, providing Falmouth Coastguard with updates on the yacht’s position and condition.
Decision to Return Onboard
With gale-force winds expected to continue over the coming days, the Coastguard team said, “after a lengthy conversation with the sailors, it was decided by them to relaunch their dinghy and make their way back onboard the yacht”.
The pair told the team they planned to head for Newlyn to seek safe refuge from the weather.
Escorted to Safety
Sennen Cove Lifeboat remained on scene until both sailors were back on board. The lifeboat then escorted the yacht to Newlyn to ensure they didn’t run into further issues.
Lands End Coastguard Search & Rescue Team were stood down once the yacht was underway, returning to station to repack kit and get ready for the next call-out.
🆘 If you see someone in danger on the coast, call 999 and ask for the COASTGUARD.
