How to Create a Stunning Bulb Lawn this October in Cornwall – Inspired by Viral TikTok Trend

Published On: 2 October 2024Last Updated: 2 October 2024By

October is the perfect time for gardeners in Cornwall to get planting, and if you’ve been inspired by the viral TikTok trend of creating a vibrant bulb lawn, now is your chance to recreate it in your own garden. The viral sensation, originally posted in 2022 by gardener Beccy, showed her planting 600 bulbs, which blossomed into a rainbow of crocuses, alliums, tulips, and more by spring.

@eeriefern I will absolutely be adding another 1,000 this autumn 🥰 #bulblawn #bulbauger #gloryofthesnow #crocuslawn #chionodoxa #gardentok #gardening #englishcottagegarden #cottagecore #bulbplanting ♬ Dreams – The Cranberries

If you’re ready to start your own spring-flowering bulb lawn, Helen Nyul, Group Head of Biodiversity at Barratt Homes, shares her top tips for getting started.

  1. Choose a spot

“Bulbs are very versatile and take well to growing in the ground as well as in a pot, but to grow a beautiful bulb lawn, you’ll want to plant them straight into the grass.

“The spot you choose should be sunny and protected from being trodden on so avoid planting them too close to garden paths. Planting them around your borders is a great way to ensure they won’t be walked over while they’re growing.

“You’ll want to plant them in groups of around eight for display. If you really want your garden to bloom, you can plant 50-100 bulbs – or even more – to give the effect of having a sea of flowers.”

  1. Plant

“Using a trowel, drill or a bulb auger, make holes in the soil around 2-3 times the depth of the bulb. Plant the bulb at the bottom of the hole with the tip pointed upwards. Then, gently fill the soil back in.

“You’ll want to space your bulbs by a couple of inches to ensure they each have enough room to grow. If the soil is dry, make sure to give them some water after planting.”

  1. Wait

“Your bulbs will begin to sprout and grow through the rest of autumn and winter. You should expect to start seeing your bulbs blooming between February and April.”

No Lawn? No Problem

For those without a lawn, Helen suggests trying out the popular ‘bulb lasagne’ technique. This TikTok gardening trend involves layering different types of bulbs in a pot, which bloom at different times from February to May.

To create your own bulb lasagne, simply layer bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, and crocuses between layers of soil in a flowerpot. You can also experiment with other spring-flowering bulbs like bluebells, iris reticulata, and snowdrops.

Spring Flowers for the Environment

Beyond their beauty, spring flowers also provide essential pollen and nectar for insects such as bees and butterflies that emerge from winter hibernation. By planting spring bulbs, you’re not only brightening up your garden but also supporting local wildlife.
