On the afternoon of 2nd June 2024, at 14:27, the Helston Community Fire Station received an emergency call about an uncontrolled bonfire.

The crew, upon approaching the location, observed smoke rising in the distance.

Fire Spreads Rapidly

The bonfire had reignited and, unfortunately, was left unattended. This oversight led to the fire spreading to the exterior of a shed and ultimately destroying the front of a nearby caravan. The rapid spread of the fire underscores the potential dangers of leaving bonfires unsupervised.

Firefighting Efforts

The fire crew acted swiftly, deploying two hosereels to combat the flames. Additionally, they utilised a thermal imaging camera and a ceiling hook to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to prevent any hidden hotspots from reigniting.

Safety Warning

The Helston Community Fire Station urges the public to exercise caution when having bonfires. It is crucial to stay with the fire and have a hose ready in case the situation gets out of control. Fires can escalate quickly, as demonstrated by this incident.

The Helston Community Fire Station’s timely response prevented further damage, but this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and vigilance.
