Polpeor Cafe’s Family Legacy Spanning Over Three Decades

Polpeor Cafe, known as Britain’s most southerly café at Lizard Point, Cornwall, is facing an uncertain future as the Hendy family, who have run the café for 30 years, prepare to step away. Peter Hendy, along with his wife Jackie, took on the lease in 1994 and, with years of hard work, transformed the café into a beloved establishment. “The time has now come for the family to let it go,” said Victoria Hendy in a heartfelt post. She added, “We would like to thank all of our amazing staff past and present. Polpeor really wouldn’t be the same without you all.”

Petition for Preservation

As the lease has now been returned to the National Trust due to Peter’s retirement, a petition has emerged urging the organisation to maintain the café’s operations. Titled Keep Polpeor Cafe Open: Retain Lease, Current Staff, and Manager,” the petition highlights the café’s pivotal role in the community. It points out Polpeor’s outstanding service, friendly atmosphere, and the personal touches that resonate deeply with visitors, including those needing assistance, such as the petition creator’s father, who is battling Parkinson’s disease.

A Community Cornerstone

Polpeor Cafe has not only been a place for good food, like its renowned cream teas and locally sourced seafood, but a cornerstone for community spirit. Victoria shared, “We would also like to thank all of our customers who I know that Polpeor holds lots of special memories for you as much as it does for us.” The petition emphasises the economic importance of the café, noting that its closure has already resulted in job losses, affecting the livelihood of many local residents.

Gratitude and Hope for the Future

Peter, Jackie, Victoria, and Luke expressed their deep appreciation for the community and the support received over the years. “Finally, we would like to thank the National Trust for all of their continued support and the great working relationship that we have,” Victoria said, closing with a heartfelt wish: “We truly wish all the best to the new beginnings at Polpeor, Britain’s Most Southerly Cafe, whoever it may be.”

The Call for Action

With concerns over the potential impact on the community and the Lizard’s tourist draw, the petition calls on the National Trust to take over the lease, ensuring the employment of the current staff and maintaining the café’s unique charm. Supporters are urged to sign the petition to safeguard Polpeor’s legacy and keep this vital part of the Lizard alive.
