Beryl, the shared sustainable transport operator, has been recognised with a King’s Award for Enterprise, marking a significant milestone as the first operator of its kind to receive one of the country’s most prestigious business accolades.

The announcement, made today, celebrates Beryl’s commitment to sustainable development through its range of transport options powered by people and electricity.

Beryl’s Impact on Sustainable Development

Since launching its first shared transport scheme in 2019, Beryl has partnered with over 20 local and regional transport authorities, including those in Cornwall where it operates in Falmouth, Penzance, Penryn, Truro, Newquay, St Austell, and Saltash. The company has facilitated millions of sustainable journeys, encouraging a shift from four wheels to two.

Beryl’s efforts have contributed to reducing traffic congestion, lowering carbon emissions, and promoting active lifestyles, enhancing the quality of life in towns and cities. CEO and co-founder, Phil Ellis, expressed the company’s dedication to sustainability and carbon reduction, noting how the award highlights their alignment with the UK government’s goal to reach net zero by 2050.

Continuing the Royal Legacy

The King’s Awards for Enterprise, previously known as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, were renamed to continue the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, recognising outstanding UK businesses. This award, now in its 58th year, allows winners to use the King’s Award emblem for the next five years, signifying the company’s status as a prestigious business.

Beryl’s Environmental Achievements

Beryl’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated in its inaugural Impact Report, released in October 2023, which outlined its environmental and social achievements. The company achieved the ISO 14001 environmental management standard in June 2023, and its sustainability targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative in October 2022. Additionally, Beryl was recertified as a B Corp registered company, recognising its exceptional social and environmental performance.
