Hidden Perk for Carers: Cornwall Leisure Centres Launch Discounted Membership Scheme
Support for Carers During ‘Active April’
To mark 60 years of Carers UK, Better leisure centres in Cornwall are launching a special offer for unpaid carers to boost their health and wellbeing.
From 1st April to 14th May, during what’s being called Active April, members of Carers UK and anyone receiving Carer’s Allowance can sign up for a discounted membership at participating Better leisure centres. The cost is reduced to £30 per month and gives access to gyms, swimming pools, fitness classes, and health suites.
Improving Wellbeing Through Exercise
The move follows research from Carers UK which found that 67% of unpaid carers said physical activity helped them feel more connected to other people.
James Curry, GLL’s Head of Service in Cornwall, said:
“We recognise the vital role that carers undertake to support and improve the lives of others.
“As a charitable social enterprise that works across the UK to improve local communities, GLL recognises and values people who are providing key contributions to society and their local community. We therefore wanted to offer better wellbeing and health opportunities for carers and our partnership with Carers UK is fundamental to driving this ambition.”
Where the Offer Applies
Better leisure centres operate under the not-for-profit GLL brand and run facilities on behalf of Cornwall Council in the following locations:
Bude, Saltash, Liskeard, St Austell, Newquay, Bodmin, Truro, Helston and St Ives.
Encouraging Connection and Self-Care
Helen Walker, Chief Executive of Carers UK, added:
“We’re really pleased to see GLL supporting Carers Active April 2025 with these discounted memberships.
“Many carers find it hard to look after their own wellbeing when they’re caring for someone, but taking part in physical activity can have important health benefits – helping to decrease stress levels and connecting carers with others in their local community.”
