Healthwatch Cornwall’s Major Revamp: How It’s Impacting Local Health Services
Healthwatch Cornwall has undergone a significant transformation over the past year, revitalising its mission to enhance local health services.
Under the leadership of Debbie Gilbert, who stepped in as CEO in December 2023, the organisation has seen substantial changes that have invigorated both staff and volunteers.
A New Leader, a New Direction
Debbie Gilbert’s appointment as CEO marked the beginning of an era of change for Healthwatch Cornwall. Since taking on the role, she has overseen the signing of new five-year contracts with Cornwall Council, a strategic move aimed at securing the organisation’s future and expanding its impact. Additionally, Healthwatch Cornwall has relocated to new offices in Newham, Truro, providing a fresh environment for the team.
“A lot has happened and a lot more will be happening over the next year to ensure we make an even more significant contribution to improving local health services,” Debbie said. Her vision is clear: to amplify the voices of the local community and ensure their health experiences are heard by NHS decision-makers.
Focusing on Key Health Issues
Healthwatch Cornwall’s mission revolves around listening to the community’s health concerns and bringing these issues to light. Debbie highlighted that the organisation has done commendable work in the past but now aims to grow and make a more substantial impact.
The recently published annual report outlines the key priorities for the coming year. Among these priorities are revisiting previous research on the cost of living and concentrating on the most pressing issues reported by the community. Concerns regarding the lack of services and inequalities in mental health are at the forefront of their agenda. Additionally, the organisation plans to delve deeper into the disparities in access to dental care.
Engaging with the Community
To further their mission, Healthwatch Cornwall will be holding an open day in the coming months. This event will serve as an opportunity for the public to learn more about the organisation’s efforts and future plans. In the meantime, Debbie encourages individuals to share their stories and questions. The public can reach out to Healthwatch Cornwall by visiting their website at www.healthwatchcornwall.co.uk or by calling 01872 273501 or 0800 038 1281.
