Have Your Say: Cornwall Council Seeks Residents’ Input on 10-Year Leisure Plan

Published On: 12 September 2024Last Updated: 12 September 2024By

Cornwall Council has launched a public consultation on its new 10-year plan for leisure facilities across the Duchy. Residents are being invited to give their feedback on the proposed framework, which will guide decisions on the future of leisure services from 2024 to 2034.

A Vision for Cornwall’s Leisure Services

The framework, titled On the Move: A Framework for Leisure Activity in Cornwall (2024-2034), outlines Cornwall Council’s vision for accessible and sustainable leisure facilities. This plan aligns with the Cornwall Plan, the Council’s broader roadmap for creating a greener, cleaner, and more inclusive Cornwall. The framework places a focus on promoting health and wellbeing, addressing health inequalities, and fostering inclusivity in leisure services.

With leisure centres across the UK facing financial challenges due to the lack of statutory funding for leisure provision, Cornwall Council is exploring new avenues to ensure the future of its leisure facilities. The Council is working with partners and leisure operators to seek alternative funding streams, including grants, to maintain a sustainable network of leisure services.

Cornwall Residents Asked to Provide Feedback

The Council is encouraging residents to share their views on the framework and the specific criteria it will use to guide decision-making. The consultation, launched on Wednesday, 11 September, will run for six weeks. Residents can review the framework and participate in the consultation on the Let’s Talk Cornwall website.

Councillor Carol Mould, portfolio holder for Neighbourhoods at Cornwall Council, highlighted the importance of the framework in ensuring that leisure facilities are safeguarded for the future. Carol stated that the Council’s vision is to create an environment where every person in Cornwall has the support and opportunity to be more active, benefitting both their health and wellbeing.

Sustainable Leisure Facilities for the Future

The framework will use specific criteria to inform decisions, ensuring that investments and support are aligned with the needs of Cornwall’s diverse communities. By focusing efforts on the areas most in need, Cornwall Council aims to empower residents to stay active while promoting long-term sustainability for the region’s leisure centres.
