Mind Highlights Mental Health Stigma in Recent Poll

Published On: 12 March 2024Last Updated: 12 March 2024By

In a revealing survey conducted by Mind, a significant portion of individuals grappling with mental health issues reported feeling ashamed of their condition.

According to the findings, 56% of respondents experiencing mental ill health confessed to feeling shame, a sentiment that often acts as a barrier to seeking necessary help and support.

Mind, an active member of the anti-stigma alliance, aims to tackle these societal stigmas and misconceptions surrounding mental health. The organisation emphasises the widely recognised phrase, “It’s okay to not be okay,” highlighting that, despite its popularity, many still struggle to internalise this message when facing their own mental health challenges.

The survey sheds light on the pervasive issue of mental health stigma and the detrimental impact it has on individual’s willingness and ability to reach out for help. Mind is addressing this issue head-on by encouraging open discussions and sharing personal stories from people across the UK. These narratives often touch on moments when individuals felt it wasn’t ‘okay to not be okay’, illuminating the commonalities in experiences of mental health struggles.

To further this cause, Mind invites the public to engage with the campaign by visiting the Mind website. Here, visitors can find more information about the campaign’s objectives, personal stories from those affected, and resources to help spread awareness, including downloadable social media posts. This campaign aims to foster a more understanding and supportive environment for everyone dealing with mental health issues, ultimately reducing the stigma and shame that too many still face.
