Breakthrough with Collared Falconet Eggs at Paradise Park

Published On: 19 July 2024Last Updated: 19 July 2024By

Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary in Cornwall has achieved a remarkable milestone as Collared Falconets, one of the smallest birds of prey, have laid eggs for the first time since their arrival.

This development marks a significant breakthrough for the sanctuary, which is the only facility in the UK and EU to house these rare birds.

Curator David Woolcock Shares the Journey

Curator David Woolcock explained the origins of the Collared Falconets at Paradise Park. “This group of Collared Falconets is here because an attempt was made to bring them into Europe illegally. They were seized by the authorities but sadly couldn’t be returned to the wild, and we have given them a home,” David said. The birds have been under the sanctuary’s care since early 2021, and the recent laying of eggs is a testament to the sanctuary’s dedication and efforts.

Giving the Eggs the Best Chance

The staff at Paradise Park are taking a careful approach to ensure the best possible outcome for the eggs. David mentioned, “We are leaving them alone and not disturbing them to give them the best chance, so it will be a little while before we know if the eggs are fertile and have hatched. But even getting to this stage is a breakthrough.” This cautious approach highlights the sanctuary’s commitment to the well-being of the birds.

Collared Falconets in the Wild

In their natural habitat, Collared Falconets are found across a wide range of countries, including Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, and Thailand. These birds of prey have a diverse diet, feeding on various insects such as cicadas, dragonflies, bees, and butterflies. They are also known to catch and eat small birds. In the wild, Collared Falconets nest in holes in tree trunks created by woodpeckers or barbets.

A Bright Future for Collared Falconets

The laying of eggs at Paradise Park brings hope for the future of Collared Falconets in captivity. The sanctuary’s efforts provide these birds with a safe environment and a chance to thrive, contributing to their conservation. As the team at Paradise Park waits to see if the eggs hatch successfully, this breakthrough offers a beacon of hope for the continued protection and understanding of these remarkable birds.
