A Rare Jewel Among Friends: Oddfellows Celebrate Friendship Month with Historic Visit to Freemasons Centre

Published On: 6 September 2024Last Updated: 6 September 2024By

In a splendid blend of history and camaraderie, members of the Oddfellows society marked their National Friendship Month with a notable visit to the historic Hayle Masonic Centre. The local Oddfellows, a friendly society dedicated to social and mutual support, were hosted by Peter Everest, Curator and Librarian of the Freemasons, who led a captivating tour of the building’s treasures.

Historical Connection and a Tour to Remember

The Hayle Masonic Centre, located in the building that once housed the White Hart Hotel, holds a significant place in Cornish history. Originally built by Henry Harvey to support his sister Jane, the wife of famed engineer Richard Trevithick, the building now serves as a treasure trove of Masonic and non-Masonic artefacts. The Oddfellows were treated to an array of historical delights, including a dazzling display of Masonic regalia and a visit to the historic library, enriching their understanding of local heritage.

A Symbolic Exchange

The highlight of the visit was the presentation of a rare Oddfellows jewel by Peter English, the District Secretary of the Oddfellows. This jewel, crafted in 1935, commemorates the society’s annual national conference church parade in Plymouth that year. “We are extremely grateful to Peter and to the Freemasons for allowing us to visit, particularly during this Oddfellows Friendship Month,” expressed Peter English during the presentation. “This really has been a great privilege for us all and a visit we have really enjoyed. Thank you, Peter, and all the Freemasons.”

Culinary Conclusion

Following the enriching tour, the group adjourned to the adjacent White Hart Hotel, where they enjoyed a convivial lunch that further celebrated the spirit of Friendship Month.
