Stranded Yacht Rescued by Fowey Lifeboat After Engine Failure

Published On: 20 September 2024Last Updated: 20 September 2024By

Fowey, 19 September 2024 – A 40ft sailing yacht on its way from Portishead to Plymouth was towed to safety by Fowey RNLI lifeboat volunteers after suffering engine failure. The incident occurred on Thursday, 19th September, leaving the vessel stranded three miles off Fowey in light winds with no other boats responding to its Pan Pan call for assistance.

Lifeboat Crew Respond to Coastguard Request

The two people on board the yacht found themselves unable to make progress under sail due to the calm conditions. After receiving no help from nearby vessels, the coastguard requested the launch of Fowey’s all-weather lifeboat to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance.

Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew found that the yacht’s crew were tired and suffering from seasickness. Given the lack of progress the yacht was making under sail and the physical state of the individuals on board, the decision was made to tow the vessel back to Fowey Harbour.

Reminder for Boat Owners

Machinery failure remains the most common reason for RNLI lifeboat call-outs. Boat owners are urged to maintain their engines regularly, carry adequate tools and spares, and ensure they have sufficient fuel for both the outward and return journeys. For more information on engine maintenance and safety, visit the RNLI website.

The quick response from the Fowey lifeboat crew ensured that the yacht and its crew were brought back to safety without further incident.
