In a dramatic rescue operation, the RNLI Fowey lifeboat was dispatched on the afternoon of 29 April following a distress call from Falmouth Coastguard.
Reports came in at approximately 1.26 pm about a woman struggling in the water just west of Charlestown Harbour.
Challenging Conditions
The lifeboat crew faced challenging conditions with Force 7 southerly winds gusting at gale force. Given the severity of the weather, the decision was made to deploy the all-weather lifeboat. The boat launched at 1.37 pm and swiftly reached the location by 1.45 pm.
Rescue on the Rocks
Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew discovered that the woman had managed to exit the water and climbed several meters up a cliff face, placing herself in a precarious position. While the lifeboat’s smaller XP boat was prepared for a possible closer approach, land-based rescue teams took over the operation.
Land Rescue Efforts
Teams from the fire service and coastguard were quick to act. They positioned a ladder adjacent to the woman and secured her with a harness. A coastguard rescuer then carefully assisted her down to safety.
Lifeboat Crew’s Role
The lifeboat stood by, ready to assist until the successful completion of the rescue operation on land. The crew was stood down at 2.57 pm and returned to their station in Fowey.

A Day of Firsts
This rescue marked a significant first for two of Fowey lifeboat’s crew members. Chris Evans participated in his first mission as a newly qualified Launch Authority, and Pete Parry, aboard the all-weather lifeboat, undertook his first rescue as a fully qualified mechanic.

Community and Courage
This incident highlights the courage and readiness of the RNLI volunteers who respond to emergencies regardless of the conditions, ensuring the safety of individuals along the coast. The successful rescue operation stands as a testament to the effective coordination between the RNLI crew and the land-based rescue teams.
