Fowey RNLI Responds to Distress Flares Near St Winnow
In an urgent response to two red distress flares sighted in the vicinity of St Winnow, Fowey’s inshore lifeboat was launched on March 14 at 10.38 am, as directed by Falmouth coastguard.
The operation, triggered by concerns about the depth of water following a high tide at 8.10 am, saw the Fowey RNLI team swiftly coordinating with local authorities to ensure a rapid response.
Understanding the potential challenges posed by the rapidly falling tide, the Harbour Master dispatched two high-speed craft to the reported location ahead of the RNLI inshore lifeboat. The lifeboat crew, led by volunteer helm Callum and including volunteers Pete and Boris, arrived shortly after the harbour patrol boats. Upon arrival, they were informed that a small rib and two canoes had been found abandoned on the west bank of the river.
Due to the tide, the lifeboat was unable to reach the shore directly. Demonstrating quick thinking and dedication, crew member Pete swam to a nearby mud bank and made his way to the abandoned crafts. Despite a thorough search of the area and the nearest house, no signs of recent activity were found, leading the coastguard to stand the crew down. The investigation was then passed on to the St. Austell Coastguard Rescue Team for further inquiry.
Chris, Fowey Lifeboat Operations Manager, seized the opportunity to remind the public about the legal implications of misusing flares. He stressed the importance of using flares solely in emergencies and ensuring that expired flares are disposed of correctly to avoid reliability issues. He also provided information for the proper disposal of old flares, directing individuals to Ocean Safety in Plympton, Plymouth.
This incident underscores the coordinated effort and professionalism of the Fowey RNLI, Fowey Harbour, and the local coastguard team in responding to potential maritime emergencies. It also serves as a critical reminder of the legal and safety considerations surrounding the use of distress flares.
