A Milestone Achievement for Will Maher and Elliot Toms

Two dedicated Fowey RNLI volunteers have reached a significant milestone in their lifesaving journey. Will Maher and Elliot Toms, after rigorous training and countless hours at sea, have successfully passed out as fully trained inshore lifeboat crew members.

Will Maher’s Journey

Will Maher, who runs a design company in Fowey, joined the lifeboat crew in March 2023. Over the past year, he has been involved in 15 incidents and participated in 34 crew exercises, accumulating 114 hours at sea. Reflecting on his achievement, Will shared, “After moving to Fowey three years ago, it was so important to become part of the community, and I couldn’t have had a warmer welcome from all the RNLI crew. It’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever been a part of.”

Will also mentioned the incredible support and training he received in both Poole and Fowey, which helped him reach this milestone. Recently married in June at Fowey Church, Will’s fellow crew members made the day even more special with a guard of honour using ceremonial oars. He fondly recalled, “One unexpected moment was when we were having photos on the harbour and the pagers went off. The experience, excitement, and best bit of all is being part of a team with some of the most amazing people.”

Elliot Toms’ Dedication

Elliot Toms, who joined the Fowey lifeboats in May 2022, works in the family business, Toms Boatyard, in Polruan. He has been involved in 10 incidents and 46 crew exercises, totalling 137 hours at sea. Elliot’s commitment to the lifeboat crew has been unwavering, contributing significantly to the team’s efforts in ensuring safety at sea.

A Word from the Coxswain

Fowey Coxswain Jonathan Pritchard expressed his pride in both Will and Elliot. “I am very pleased for Will and Elliot. They have worked hard and shown enthusiasm and dedication throughout their training. They are both a great asset to Fowey lifeboat station, and everyone congratulates them on their successful passing out,” he said.

The Olive Three Lifeboat

Fowey’s D class inshore lifeboat, the Olive Three, plays a critical role in search and rescue missions. With a top speed of 25 knots and the ability to endure three hours at sea at this speed, it is a crucial asset when lives are at risk.

Will Maher and Elliot Toms’ achievements highlight the dedication and community spirit of the Fowey RNLI volunteers. Their hard work and commitment are invaluable in maintaining safety along the coast.
