Scone Sacrilege? Cornish Company Issues Apology After Christmas Dinner Twist

Published On: 9 January 2025Last Updated: 9 January 2025By

The Cornish Company has issued a public apology following the release of their Christmas Dinner Scone, which has been dubbed by The Guardian as the “biggest scone scandal of all time”. The controversy erupted after the company introduced the festive scone in an attempt to simplify Christmas Dinner and reduce stress.

A Festive Twist Sparks Outrage

According to the company’s research, nearly 39% of people find Christmas Dinner stressful. However, their solution—an all-in-one Christmas Dinner Scone—did not go down well with the Cornish public. Many took to social media to voice their dismay, with one comment reading: “This is surely a crime.” Another declared: “Anyone who puts gravy on a scone needs locking up, this is surely sacrilege.”

Cathy Woolcock, head of the Cornwall Heritage Trust, which works to preserve Cornwall’s traditions, also weighed in:
“At the Cornwall Heritage Trust, we are all about tradition. As far as we are concerned, do not mess with a Cornish scone. It is jam first with clotted cream on top. Cornish people are protective of their scones. A Cornishman would always enjoy a pasty over a Christmas dinner-flavoured scone.”

The Cornish Company’s Response

Despite the Christmas Dinner Scone selling out in under 48 hours and seeing demand from across the UK, the backlash in Cornwall was strong enough for the company to issue an apology.

Tom Woodley, founder and managing director of The Cornish Company, acknowledged the sentiment:
“We have to apologise to our friends, family, customers and fellow Cornish. Despite the Christmas Dinner scone selling out in under 48 hours and the UK going wild for it, we know this was, as some have said, ‘sacrilege’. That’s why we’re saying sorry to our Cornish customers and next time maybe we’ll keep the gravy separate…”

A Peace Offering

In an attempt to make amends, The Cornish Company has released an exclusive 10% discount code for all customers. To claim the discount, customers need to enter the code Christmasdinnerscone10 at checkout. The offer is available for 48 hours starting from midnight on Wednesday and can be used once per customer.

With this gesture, the company hopes to rebuild goodwill with its Cornish customers and avoid further controversy in the future.
