Prima Bakeries Group Acquires Cornish Biscuit Maker Furniss of Cornwall
In a significant move within the Cornish food industry, Prima Bakeries Group has announced the acquisition of the venerable biscuit manufacturer, Furniss of Cornwall. This strategic acquisition integrates Furniss into the expanding portfolio of the Redruth-based Prima Bakeries Group, known for its dynamic growth in the local bakery sector.
Strategic Growth and Expansion
Prima Bakeries Group, led by Managing Director Mark Norton, now encompasses Prima Bakeries, Cornish Premier Pasties, and the latest addition, Furniss of Cornwall. This latest acquisition comes off the back of a record-breaking financial performance, with the group’s turnover poised to hit £15 million annually by the end of 2024. Mark Norton commented on the merger, highlighting the synergies and complementary nature of the product ranges between the companies. “This is an incredibly exciting time for us, as we bring another iconic Cornish food brand under our wing,” he stated.
Investment in Infrastructure and People
Under the new ownership, Furniss of Cornwall will operate within the framework of the Employee Ownership Trust, ensuring that all staff are part of the decision-making process and benefit from the company’s success. Further investments are planned for the production facilities in Redruth to enable Furniss to reach its full potential.
Boosting Local Economy and Workforce
The acquisition is not just a business expansion but also a boon for the local economy. The Group recently transitioned to an Employee Ownership Trust, which, according to Mark Norton, makes this expansion even more significant. “It’s proof that we’re supporting both our local people and the wider economy,” he noted during the announcement.
Moreover, Prima Bakeries Group is set to open a new 20,000 sq. ft. production facility in St Columb later this year, which will double the production capacity for their award-winning pasties, marking another milestone in their commitment to growth and local employment.
A Rich Heritage
Furniss of Cornwall, started by John Cooper Furniss in 1886, is best known for being the only company in the world licensed to make The Original Cornish Fairing™. Operating from Redruth with a workforce of 30 full-time staff, Furniss’s products have reached a cult status among biscuit lovers worldwide.
The deal facilitating the acquisition of Furniss by Prima Bakeries Group was supported by Mark Champion of Exeter-based ISCA Ventures, corporate finance specialists, and Tim Jackman of Plymouth-based solicitors Whyte Jackman.
Looking Ahead
With these strategic moves, Prima Bakeries Group solidifies its position as a major player in the Cornish food industry, with a clear vision for future growth and a continued commitment to local heritage and global excellence.
This acquisition marks a new chapter for Furniss of Cornwall and a broader horizon for Prima Bakeries Group, promising exciting developments for Cornwall’s culinary scene.
