Bosavern Community Farm Celebrates Abundance of Ethical Eggs
In a delightful turn of events, Bosavern Community Farm has announced an abundant supply of locally produced, sustainable, and ethical eggs.
The farm, known for its commitment to community and environmental stewardship, has recently undertaken several significant measures to ensure the continued availability of high-quality eggs for its local community.
Investment in Sustainability
March saw the farm investing time and resources into securing the future of ethical egg production. This included enhancing animal care and hygiene procedures, which have once again passed a rigorous inspection, affirming the farm’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of welfare for its hens.
Enhancements to Farm Infrastructure
Tommy, a skilled individual, has contributed to the farm’s efforts by beautifully fencing the Meeting Field to protect against foxes, with support from FIPL. This new fencing is expected to last for a decade, providing long-term security for the farm’s hens. Additionally, shelterbelts of saplings have been planted around the field’s perimeter, inside and outside the fence, thanks to the hard work of Sunday afternoon Tree Planting volunteers and support from Forest for Cornwall. These efforts not only enhance the farm’s sustainability but also contribute to the character of the local landscape.
In a nod to eco-friendly practices, new gates have been constructed using repurposed materials by a dedicated maintenance volunteer, further underlining the farm’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
A New Home for Hens
As part of its crop rotation strategy, the farm has relocated its chicken sheds into the Meeting Field. The 350 hens now housed there are enjoying the lush green grass and the remains of last season’s crops. The hens, now on a new organic feed and benefiting from longer daylight hours, have responded positively to their new environment, laying eggs by the dozen.
Community Call to Action
Bosavern Community Farm is now reaching out to its customers, encouraging them to take advantage of the surplus of quality, ethical eggs. Retailing at £2.50 per half dozen, these eggs are available from the farm shop, weekly markets, and can also be added to veg box deliveries. Those requiring larger orders are encouraged to arrange a wholesale purchase by emailing info@bosaverncommunityfarm.org.uk .
The farm’s hens are checked for feed and water four times a day and enjoy free range in the spacious, newly fenced field, ensuring their wellbeing and happiness.
In conclusion, Bosavern Community Farm’s efforts in sustainable, ethical egg production are a testament to its commitment to the community and the environment. With an abundance of eggs now available, the farm is inviting the local community to support this venture and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
