In a significant development for the Port of Newlyn, the Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners (NP&HC) and W Stevenson & Sons Limited (WS&S) have finalised a landmark agreement, poised to redefine the UK’s leading quality fish auction from 1st April 2024.
This formalisation solidifies a longstanding and productive relationship, setting the stage for a modernised partnership aimed at bolstering the facilities and services for the Cornish fleet and the wider UK fishing industry.
Exclusive Auctioneering Rights and Modernisation Efforts
With the agreement set to activate on the 1st of April, WS&S will assume exclusive auctioneering rights at Newlyn Fish Market for a duration of seven years. This strategic move guarantees continued investment in personnel and equipment, aiming for an efficient and well-managed fish auction at the heart of the Port. Rob Wing, Chairman of NP&HC, underlined the agreement’s significance, stating it provides an optimal opportunity for fishers using Newlyn Fish Market.

Sustainable Development and Industry Support
The agreement enables NP&HC to focus on the sustainable development of the Newlyn Harbour estate, ensuring the harbour and quays remain well-maintained for all users. Paul Trebilcock, Managing Director of WS&S, emphasised the commitment to an efficient, transparent, and independent auction operation. The goal is to further elevate Newlyn’s reputation as the premier market for quality fish in the UK, attracting more vessels, securing a greater quantity of fish for sale, and achieving the best possible prices for the auctioned fish.
Looking Ahead
Both NP&HC and WS&S are united in their vision for Newlyn’s future, aspiring to maintain its status as the UK’s foremost fishing port. They are committed to providing a safe and efficient harbour, continuously improving facilities and services, and ensuring the availability of the finest fish. This agreement, set against a backdrop of challenges in the fishing industry, marks a shared pledge to support the sector’s catching, landing, buying, and selling processes in West Cornwall.
