Why Has the Catch Stopped? New Cornish Short Film ‘Hegoledh’ Seeks Support

A new Cornish short film, Hegoledh, meaning ‘superstition’ in Kernewek, is calling for support via Crowdfunder to bring its compelling story to life. Directed by Guy Potter, the part-English, part-Cornish language film follows the success of Trengellick Rising, which made waves at the BAFTA and Oscar-qualifying Encounters Film Festival, received screenings at Merlin Cinemas in Cornwall, and earned recognition from Gorsedh Kernow for its contribution to Cornish culture and language.

A Tale of Mystery and Suspicion

Hegoledh tells the story of a fisherman whose luck at sea mysteriously runs out. But this isn’t just a case of bad weather—something much larger is at play. When a stranger arrives to lend a hand, tensions rise as fear and suspicion swirl around the newcomer’s intentions.

Director Guy Potter explains:

“‘Hegoledh’ tackles the universal theme of xenophobia: of not being welcome somewhere and the suspicions around someone who’s ‘not from round here’. It’s a universal theme for a universal film, that’s more fable than fiction.”

Like Trengellick Rising, Hegoledh will feature dialogue in Kernewek to weave Cornwall’s ancient language and landscape into the fabric of the story.

“This film is all about roots, and our connection with time and space, people and planet. Therefore, utilising the ancient landscape and language is essential, and it is weaved within the narrative for the best of both worlds, to complement our universal approach and theme.”

Filming on 16mm Kodak

In a nod to the rich textures of Cornwall’s coast, Hegoledh will be shot entirely on 16mm Kodak film—this time in colour. Guy notes that this approach will help capture the essence of Cornwall’s rugged beauty, from the salt in the air to the spray of the waves.

A Story Rooted in Cornwall

The script for Hegoledh was developed as part of an MA course in Film and TV at Falmouth University and written by Guy in early 2024. Filming is scheduled to begin in February 2025.

Guy’s experience includes working with Steven Spielberg on Ready Player One and training with the Sundance Institute in the US. Now based near Falmouth, he draws inspiration from Cornwall’s rich heritage and enigmatic stories.
