Farmers in the South West Offered Free Trees to Boost Biodiversity: 100,000 Up for Grabs

Published On: 17 October 2024Last Updated: 17 October 2024By

In a bid to improve biodiversity and combat climate change, the Woodland Trust has launched its second major tree giveaway for farmers in the South West. Over 100,000 trees are set to be distributed free of charge, offering a significant opportunity for local farmers to enhance their land while supporting environmental sustainability.

Free Tree Packs to Suit Farm Needs

Funded by Lloyds Bank, this tree giveaway allows farmers to receive packs containing 45 trees or shrubs, tailored to their specific land requirements. The options available include:

  • Thorny ‘In-fill’ Hedgerow Pack: Ideal for creating natural barriers.
  • Copse Pack: Perfect for farmers looking to plant small woodland areas.
  • Wet Field Corner Pack: Specially designed for areas prone to water retention.

Farmers can apply online to select the pack that best suits their farm’s needs. With 17 different collection points across the South West, participants can choose their preferred collection date and location.

Expert Advice on Woodland Creation

At the heart of this programme is the expert support provided by woodland creation professionals. These specialists will be present at tree collection points to offer farmers advice on:

  • Woodland creation: How to best integrate trees into their farms.
  • Agroforestry: Combining agriculture and forestry to improve land use.
  • Funding options: Guidance on how to access additional financial support for tree planting.

This hands-on assistance is expected to significantly help farmers maximise the benefits of trees on their land.

Why Trees Matter for Farmers

The Woodland Trust highlights several key benefits of planting trees on farms:

  • Climate Resilience: Trees act as windbreaks, provide shelter for livestock, and help reduce the impact of extreme weather, making farms more resilient to climate change.
  • Soil Health: Trees improve soil structure, enhance nutrient cycling, and increase water retention, contributing to healthier, more productive soils.
  • Biodiversity: Trees create habitats for wildlife, attracting beneficial insects and supporting bird species, all of which contribute to a more balanced ecosystem.

How to Apply for Free Trees

Farmers interested in applying for free trees can do so via the Woodland Trust’s website. The application process is straightforward, with early applications encouraged due to the high demand in previous years.

With trees helping to mitigate the effects of climate change and promote biodiversity, this programme presents a valuable opportunity for farmers in the South West to enhance both their land and the environment.
