Swift Rescue: Lifeboat Crew Saves Stranded Boat Near Falmouth

On Wednesday, 3rd July 2024, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded near Ski Beach in Carrick Roads.

Falmouth Coastguard received multiple emergency calls regarding a 15ft cabin boat that had broken down and drifted ashore with two people on board. The volunteer crew of Falmouth Lifeboat Station swiftly responded to the situation.

Lifeboat Launch

The crew was paged shortly after 6.00 pm, launching their Atlantic 85 lifeboat, ‘Robina Nixon Chard,’ just seven minutes later. Despite smooth seas and a force 3 onshore wind, the situation required urgent attention. Alongside the lifeboat crew, the Portscatho Coastguard Rescue Team was also dispatched to assist in the rescue effort.

On-Site Assessment

The lifeboat reached the stranded vessel at approximately 6.20 pm. Two crew members were dropped ashore to assess the condition of the boat and its occupants. Fortunately, both individuals on board were uninjured. Attention then turned to the boat, which remained watertight and light enough to be manually handled.

Successful Rescue

To prevent further emergency calls, the lifeboat helmsman decided to re-float the boat and tow it to safety. The vessel was successfully brought to a safe location and handed over to the care of the Truro Harbourmaster. The lifeboat crew’s swift and efficient actions ensured the safety of the boat and its occupants.

Return to Base

The lifeboat was officially released from service by the Coastguard just before 8.00 pm. The crew returned to the station, where the lifeboat was refuelled and washed down by 8.22 pm, ready for its next mission.
