Stranded Off Pendennis Point: Lifeboat Rushes to Rescue Broken Down RIB

Four People Rescued After Boat Breaks Down Near Falmouth

Falmouth’s relief Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat was called into action yesterday evening, Monday 7th April, after a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) with four people on board broke down and became stranded off Pendennis Point.

The RIB, measuring six metres, had been anchored after suffering mechanical issues. A series of earlier Pan Pan calls received no response, prompting a call for lifeboat assistance.

Paged and Launched Within Minutes

Volunteer lifeboat crew were paged at 6.22pm. The inshore lifeboat, Sam and Freda Parkinson, launched just nine minutes later at 6.31pm.

Twelve minutes after launching, the crew arrived on scene to find moderate sea conditions, an easterly wind at force 4 to 5, and excellent visibility.

Towed to Safety at Port Pendennis

Due to the risk the broken down RIB posed to navigation and concerns for the welfare of those on board, a decision was made to tow the vessel to the nearest point of safety.

The RIB was brought safely alongside at Port Pendennis, and the lifeboat was released from service at 7.20pm before returning to station.
