First Call-Out of the Year for Volunteer Crew

Falmouth’s volunteer lifeboat crew had their first rescue mission of 2025 on Friday, 18th January. The crew were paged at 2.06pm to assist a 34ft motor boat that had broken down between Nare Point and Porthallow. Seven people were onboard the vessel, which had dropped its anchor to prevent drifting towards the coastline.

Complicated Recovery in Challenging Conditions

The relief Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Julie Poolie, launched at 2.20pm in easterly force 3-4 winds, arriving at the scene just 19 minutes later. While those onboard were unharmed, the anchor had become entangled with mussel beds, complicating the recovery.

After assessing the situation, the helm decided the safest course of action was to cut the anchor line. A tow was then initiated, bringing the vessel back to Falmouth, where marina staff took over.

Routine Maintenance Underway

The mission concluded with the lifeboat returning to the station by 5.55pm for a thorough wash-down and refuelling. The station’s inshore lifeboat, Robina Nixon Chard, remains out of action for an inhouse refit and routine maintenance but is expected back next week.
