Ground-breaking Engineering Course Set to Inspire Young Minds in Falmouth
A pioneering educational programme has been unveiled in Falmouth, providing school-aged children with a unique opportunity to delve into the world of engineering. The Pre-16 Engineering programme, believed to be among the first of its kind in the UK, was launched at Falmouth Marine School, part of The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), in collaboration with The Crown Estate.
A First-of-Its-Kind Opportunity
This new programme is designed to introduce children under the age of 16 to the fields of engineering and renewable energy. Speaking at the launch, Steve Taylor, head of Falmouth Marine School, highlighted the significance of the programme: “This programme will provide early exposure to the engineering and renewable energy sectors, inspiring the next generation of innovative thinkers.”
The initiative aims to engage students at an early age, preparing them for future career opportunities while also contributing to the growth of a highly skilled workforce. Steve emphasised that this workforce is essential for the region’s economic development and sustainability.
Industry Support and Engagement
The launch event at the Falmouth campus attracted representatives from several leading businesses, including Celtic Sea Power, Pendennis Shipyard, Mylor Harbour, and others. These industry leaders expressed their support for the programme, which they believe will play a critical role in building the local workforce needed for the UK’s energy transition.
Attendees were treated to a tour of Falmouth Marine School’s state-of-the-art facilities, engaging talks from industry experts, and a celebration of the achievements of the students who have already begun their journey in the programme. Each student was presented with uniforms, generously provided by The Crown Estate.
Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
Deborah Clark, Sustainability Director at The Crown Estate, shared her enthusiasm for the programme: “We’re delighted to work in partnership with The Cornwall College Group to launch this exciting programme with Falmouth Marine School. The Celtic Sea is set to play an important role in driving the UK’s energy transition.”
Deborah also stressed the importance of raising awareness among young people about the opportunities in offshore wind and the broader renewable energy sector. She expressed hope that the course will become a model for how young people can be inspired at a critical stage in their education, helping them contribute to the UK’s net-zero ambitions.
A Pathway to Success
The programme has also garnered strong support from local educational institutions. Alex Lingard, head of Helston Community College, praised the enthusiasm of the students participating in the programme. “The passion and engagement from the students have been tremendous,” Alex said. He added that the hands-on experience provided by the course offers a clear pathway to careers in engineering and renewable energy industries.
The first cohort of Year 10 students will begin their course this September, marking the start of what promises to be an exciting chapter in Falmouth’s educational landscape.
