Pendennis Shipyard Employees Gear Up for Charity Bike Ride Across Cornwall
In an inspiring display of solidarity and community spirit, a group of employees from Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, known globally for its exceptional work on superyachts, is setting their sights on a different kind of challenge. Trading the luxury of yachts for the simplicity of bicycles, a 10-person team from the shipyard is preparing for a rigorous 300-kilometre charity bike ride across Cornwall to support the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity.
Led by Jason Renfree, a fellow employee and cancer survivor, the team has committed to the Pedal4Patients ‘Tour de Kernow’ taking place from 19-21 September. The initiative draws participants for a three-day cycling journey through Cornwall, aimed at fundraising for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity. Renfree’s participation last year, following his recovery from cancer of the tonsil, inspired his colleagues to join the cause. His efforts alone raised over £13,000, highlighting the personal stakes and dedication behind the team’s motivation.
Remarkably, most members of the Pendennis team, including the company’s Chairman Mike Carr, are new to road cycling. Carr, who recently purchased a bike specifically for this event, expressed his enthusiasm and the collective motivation driving the team. “Pendennis Shipyard owes its global success to the people who work here,” Carr stated, emphasising the importance of supporting each other, especially through challenges such as illness.
The cycling route is designed to showcase Cornwall’s scenic beauty, starting at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro and passing through iconic locations like St Ives, Penzance, Falmouth, St Austell, and Padstow before looping back to Truro. The event is not competitive but focuses on participation, fitness, enjoyment, and fundraising. With accommodations and refreshments provided along the route, organisers ensure a supportive and enjoyable experience for all riders, regardless of their cycling proficiency.
To support the Pendennis team’s fundraising efforts, donations can be made via their JustGiving page. Additionally, information on how to participate in the Pedal4Patients ‘Tour de Kernow’ is available for those interested in joining the ride or contributing to the cause.
This charitable initiative by Pendennis Shipyard employees not only highlights their commitment to community and health causes but also showcases the power of collective action in making a significant impact.
