Monterey Pine Falls in Falmouth’s Old Cemetery
A familiar silhouette lost
A much-loved Monterey Pine in Falmouth’s Old Cemetery, known to many for its dinosaur-like shape, has fallen. The tree, often remembered alongside its neighbouring pine for forming a skyline silhouette said to resemble a T-Rex, came down on Tuesday 15th July.
Falmouth Town Council confirmed the tree was last professionally inspected using the Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) method, an industry-recognised system that measures tree health and risk. At the time, the pine was deemed healthy, with only a recommendation to cut back ivy to reduce wind resistance — a task that was carried out.
Climate change concerns
Despite the clean bill of health at its last check, the recent stretch of hot, dry weather is believed to have put the tree under significant stress. According to the council, these types of sudden failures are becoming more common as a result of changing climate conditions.

Work begins today
Removal works are set to begin today, Thursday 17th July. Falmouth Town Council has asked visitors to take care when accessing the area while the operation is underway.
A growing future for the cemetery
Although the loss of this landmark is sad news for many, there is a positive outlook. The council highlighted that more trees are planted in the Old Cemetery than are lost, and a growing number of young trees are now thriving among the older planting. These efforts are helping preserve the town’s treescape for future generations.
