Kayaker Saved by Falmouth Lifeboat After Struggling in Rough Seas
A solo kayaker was rescued by the Falmouth Lifeboat crew on Thursday, 8th August 2024, after facing challenging conditions two miles southeast of Zone Point. The kayaker, who had embarked on a four-day expedition from The Lizard to Brixham, encountered worsening weather that led to an emergency Mayday call.
Conditions Worsen Mid-Expedition
The kayaker initially set out with plans for a multi-day journey along the coast, but as conditions deteriorated, continuing the trip became increasingly perilous. Faced with moderate seas and a southwest wind of force 3/4, the kayaker made the crucial decision to seek help rather than risk exhaustion and potential danger.
Lifeboat Crew Responds Swiftly
At 10.53am, the Falmouth Lifeboat crew received the alert and promptly launched their inshore lifeboat, ‘Robina Nixon Chard’, at 11.00am. The crew navigated the challenging conditions and used their directional finding equipment to locate the kayaker’s Personal Location Beacon, which had been activated as requested by the Coastguard.
Thanks to the quick response and advanced technology, the lifeboat reached the kayaker within just nine minutes of launching. Upon arrival, the crew confirmed that the kayaker did not require medical assistance and safely brought both the kayaker and their boat onboard.
Kayaker Praised for Preparedness
The lifeboat returned to the station at 11.55am, concluding the successful rescue operation. The rescued kayaker was well-equipped for the journey, wearing a dry suit, buoyancy aid, and carrying essential safety equipment, including a radio, mobile phone, and Personal Location Beacon. This preparedness, along with the prompt decision to call for help, was crucial in ensuring a positive outcome.
