Joe Sibley Makes Waves as Falmouth’s New Lifeboat Mechanic

Published On: 16 July 2024Last Updated: 16 July 2024By

Falmouth RNLI has a new hero on board. Joe Sibley, a volunteer crew member, has recently qualified as the station’s newest all-weather lifeboat mechanic on the Severn class all-weather lifeboat Richard Cox Scott.

A Lifelong Connection to the Sea

Joe’s journey with the RNLI began long before his recent qualification. Born and raised on the Isles of Scilly, Joe’s family has deep ties with the RNLI. His father and two brothers-in-law serve as crew members on the St Mary’s all-weather lifeboat. Joe’s formal association with the RNLI started in 2014 when he became a crew member at Plymouth. His commitment saw him also serve at St Mary’s during his visits back to the Isles of Scilly.

In 2016, Joe expanded his skills by qualifying as an inshore lifeboat helm at Plymouth and as an all-weather lifeboat navigator. His training as a mechanic began in Plymouth but faced delays due to the Covid pandemic. However, Joe’s move to Falmouth in 2022 allowed him to continue and complete his mechanic training.

Seamless Transition to Falmouth

Joe’s transition to Falmouth RNLI was smooth, thanks to the station’s similar equipment to Plymouth, including an Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat and a Severn class all-weather lifeboat. This familiarity enabled Joe to quickly integrate and continue his training without interruption.

Falmouth RNLI Coxswain Jonathon Blakeston praised Joe’s accomplishments, noting, “Joe has qualified as one of the RNLI’s first afloat mechanics, a new role which ensures operational readiness and safety of the lifeboat while at sea. The role supports the station mechanic. Joe has done well; he has natural ability and he passed his final assessment with flying colours.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Joe’s qualification marks a significant milestone in his career with the RNLI, highlighting his dedication and skill. As he takes on the new responsibilities of an afloat mechanic, Falmouth RNLI stands to benefit greatly from his expertise and commitment to saving lives at sea.
