Falmouth Town Council Urges Public to Avoid Open Fires on Beaches After Recent Incident

Published On: 19 January 2024Last Updated: 19 January 2024By

In a recent statement, Falmouth Town Council has issued a stern reminder to residents about the prohibition of open fires on all beaches in the town. This announcement follows an incident on Wednesday morning where Environmental, Education, and Enforcement officers discovered the remains of a large fire on Gylly Beach.

The fire, which was found close to a wooden lifeguard hut, posed a significant risk, as the structure could have easily caught fire.

Furthermore, the location of the fire above the tide line has resulted in an unsightly patch of burnt sand and ash, causing environmental concerns.

In light of this event, the Council is reinforcing the importance of following the local regulations to ensure the safety and cleanliness of

Falmouth’s beaches. The Council has outlined three key rules for beachgoers to adhere to:

  1. No Open Fires Directly on the Sand: Residents and visitors are urged to use vessels like barbecues for fires and to responsibly dispose of all remains afterwards.
  2. Proper Disposal of Litter: The Council encourages everyone to bin and recycle litter to maintain the cleanliness of the beach environment.
  3. Adherence to Dog-Friendly Hours and Waste Disposal: Beachgoers with pets are reminded to follow the designated hours for dog access and to clean up after their pets.

The Council emphasises that these measures are crucial for keeping Falmouth’s sands safe and enjoyable for everyone. In case of any violations, such as open fires on the sand, the public is urged to report the incident to Cornwall Council through the ‘report it’ pages on their website under anti-social behaviour and to contact the local authorities at 101.

Falmouth Town Council remains committed to preserving the natural beauty and safety of its beaches. They call upon the cooperation of all residents and visitors in respecting these guidelines to ensure a pleasant and secure beach experience for all.
