On Wednesday, 10th July 2024, a yacht carrying five people issued a Pan Pan distress call to Falmouth Coastguard after taking on water in Falmouth Bay. The yacht, struggling to manage the water ingress, requested an escort back to its moorings in Mylor.
Swift Response by Lifeboat
The Falmouth inshore lifeboat, ‘Robina Nixon Chard’, launched just before midday and reached the distressed yacht within eight minutes. Upon arrival, the harbour master’s launch, ‘Killigrew’, was already on the scene, assisting the yacht. It was determined that the water ingress was manageable at that moment, but the lifeboat’s helm decided to deploy a salvage pump to help empty the yacht’s cockpit of water.
Safe Escort to Mylor
With the salvage pump in place, both ‘Killigrew’ and the lifeboat escorted the yacht safely back to Mylor. Once there, the yacht was secured alongside a pontoon for a thorough investigation into the cause of the water ingress. All crew members disembarked safely.
Mission Accomplished
The lifeboat was released by HM Coastguard at 12:51 PM and returned to its station by 1:05 PM. The crew then prepared the lifeboat for future service, ensuring it was washed down and ready for any further emergencies.
