In a significant event marking progress and celebration within the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Tamara Brookes, a dedicated helm from the Falmouth inshore lifeboat crew, had the privilege of participating in the inaugural Women in Search and Rescue (SAR) conference.

Held at the RNLI College in Poole, this gathering took place on the 7th and 8th of March, following closely after International Women’s Day, underscoring the charity’s commitment to recognising and empowering its female volunteers.

Celebrating Female Volunteers

The conference was a beacon for female volunteers across the charity, attracting 40 participants from various parts of the country. It aimed not only to celebrate the invaluable contributions of women but also to inspire more individuals to get involved with their local lifeboat stations. The agenda was packed with inspirational talks, operational exercises, and tours of the headquarters and training facilities in Poole, providing a comprehensive insight into the world of search and rescue operations.

Hands-on Experience and Learning

Participants had the opportunity to engage in practical exercises aboard various lifeboats, ranging from the compact 5m D-class inshore lifeboat to the Tamar and Shannon class all-weather lifeboats, the newest additions to the RNLI fleet. These exercises included helicopter drills in collaboration with HM Coastguard, as well as slow speed transfers and man overboard skills training. Tamara, reflecting on the experience, highlighted the value of practising skills on the water and learning from the experiences of fellow crew members.

Insights and Inspirations

The conference featured a series of talks focusing on human factors, leadership, and research into the role of women in the SAR sector internationally. Speakers from Bangladesh and Tanzania provided global perspectives, enriching the discussions. Moreover, attendees gained unique insights into the lifeguard world and air ambulance services, learning from colleagues about their critical work in these areas.

Inaugural RNLI Women in SAR Awards

A highlight of the conference was the introduction of the RNLI Women in SAR Awards, aimed at recognising individuals who play a pivotal role in supporting and championing women in the search and rescue sector. The first award was presented to Anna Heslop, helm at Cullercoats RNLI, while Simon Ling, head of lifeboats, was honoured with the Women in SAR Ally of the Year Award.

Building Togetherness and Camaraderie

The conference underscored the importance of creating opportunities for togetherness and camaraderie among volunteers. Tamara expressed her honour in participating in this landmark event, noting the invaluable experience of working with fellow crew members, exchanging experiences, and forging new friendships. The event was not only a celebration of women’s achievements in the SAR sector but also a testament to the strength and inspiration that come from shared experiences.

This inaugural Women in SAR conference stands as a testament to the RNLI’s ongoing efforts to acknowledge and amplify the contributions of women within the life-saving community, setting a precedent for future gatherings and the continued advancement of women in search and rescue operations.
